SpacerMusculoskeletal Radiology

MCR's Musculoskeletal Division provides a full spectrum of diagnostic and intervential procedures for all aspects of bone and joint disease, including congenital disorders, trauma, infection, neoplasm, arthritis, and systemic disorders. Diagnostic studies are tailored to specific problems, utilizing conventional radiographs, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, nuclear isotope scans, and dual xray absorptiometry (DXA).

Staffed by fellowship-trained radiologists, we are committed to providing expert interpretation on a wide range of MRI studies, from sports related injuries to complex MRI of the diabetic foot. MRI is also routinely utilized to evaluate the spine and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Our MRI facilities are in multiple locations with early and late appointments available. The MRI scanner at Sentara Leigh Hospital is open 24/7.

Ultrasound studies are used to evaluate the superficial tendons and solid or cystic masses. Nuclear scans include bone scans or a combination of bone and infection localizing scans (such as Indium scans or Technetium white blood cells scans). Measuring bone density for evaluation of osteoporosis is accomplished through the use of DXA.

Arthrograms are minimally invasive diagnostic studies that involve injection of contrast material into the joints, most commonly the shoulders, wrists, hips, and knees. MRI arthrograms or CT arthograms are also offered. These studies allow for evaluation of post operative rotator cuffs or labrum in the shoulders, ligaments and cartilage in small joints (such as wrists), and intraarticular loose bodies in the joints. Joint aspirations for synovial fluid analysis or infected joints can also be performed under fluoroscopy or CT guidance.

Interventional procedures include percutaneous biopsy of bone and muscle that can eliminate the need of open surgical biopsy. Pain control is offered through injection of anesthetics and steroids in a variety of joints, as indicated, including selective nerve blocks and epidural analgesia.
